Ser and Estar

Both ser and estar mean "to be". However, they are used at different times.

Uses of estar:
1. temporary conditions
2. location
3. present progressive (will be explained later)

Examples:
1. Ella está enferma. - She is sick.
2. Mi libro está aqui. - My book is here.
3. Estoy corriendo. - I am running.

Uses of ser:
1. basic characteristics
2. origin/nationality
3. time
4. events that take place
5. profession
6. possession
7. material

Examples:
1. Tú eres alto. - You are tall.
2. Soy de los Estados Unidos. - I am from the United States.
3. Son las ocho. - It's 8 o'clock.
4. El desfile es hoy. - The parade is today.
5. Ellos son profesores. - They are teachers.
6. Es mi libro. - It's my book.
7. Es de cuero. - It's leather.
